Whitefield Community Garden
Love & Carrots has begun work with the Wesley Housing Development Corporation at their Whitefield Commons. Wesley Housing is a charitable nonprofit that has sponsored 25 communities in Northern Virginia, a state that holds three of the five wealthiest counties in the country. The mission of Wesley Housing is to “develop, own, operate, preserve, and maintain affordable housing and sustain quality communities for low- and moderate-income families and individuals in Northern Virginia.”
There are approximately 160 residents at Whitefield, some of whom are now hanging out in their residential gardens, working on maintenance and garden education with us! Love and Carrots is working shoulder-to-shoulder with Greg Rockwell, Director of Youth Activities for Wesley Housing. Greg has already brought in 3 raised beds, and two more are on its way. Love and Carrots tends to Whitefield’s gardens twice a month to educate children about gardening skills and the importance of real food. It has been an adventure thus far and well-worth every second! For most of these kids it is the first time planting a seed and handling a transplant. Even introducing different varieties of vegetables have left the kids in awe. It has been a pleasure for us to work with Greg who is such an inspiration and whose heart and energy is with these youth everyday.
